Merchants Bridge – the second oldest bridge over the Mississippi River in the St. Louis region – had exceeded its design life. To bring the bridge back to an acceptable level of service, TranSystems led the design for reconstruction of the Merchants Bridge, providing engineering for components of the main span trusses, deck plate girder approaches and the east approach trestle encasement. The three main aspects included the removal and replacement of the three 520-foot river-span through trusses, seismically retrofitting the four existing river piers, and significantly improving the east approach.
