Wando Welch Container Yard
Mt. Pleasant, SC
In preparing for the proliferation of mega-container vessel calls at its Wando Welch Terminal (WWT), South Carolina Ports Authority contracted TranSystems to prepare construction documents for densifying its rubber tire gantry crane container stacks to create more capacity within the existing terminal footprint. This project is part of the SCPA plan to increase the throughput capacity at the WWT to adapt to long term demand and growth in cargo volume.
As part of this project, TranSystems provided topographic and utility surveys, as well as traditional engineering and design for relocating existing utilities and improving failed pavements. The design of a new container stack arrangement was developed to provide a minimum throughput capacity increase of 15 percent. This was accomplished by a stacking containers in a more compact arrangement, consolidating drive aisles and relocating existing utilities. The relocation of utilities was minimized where possible to reduce overall project costs and did include examining existing storm drainage, potable water and fire protection, sanitary sewer, electrical and communications, security infrastructure, and associated services to best implement the proposed arrangement plan.
