Alkire Road Roundabout Design
Franklin County, Ohio
The intersection of Alkire Road and Demorest Road faced numerous safety concerns. Several low cost measures were implemented without achieving the results desired. The county sought to replace the interchange with a single land roundabout, the most effective way to address safety concerns while accommodating physical constraints around the site. TranSystems designed the roundabout, which included a 135-foot inscribed circular diameter (ICD) with a single lane, 18’ wide circulating roadway and a 13’ wide truck apron. The circulating roadway was designed to accommodate a city bus not having to use the truck apron. Sidewalks, curb ramps and crosswalks were included on all four legs of the roundabout.
