Chicago O’Hare International Airport Multimodal Facility Opens Its Doors
On October 31, 2018, the O’Hare International Airport Multimodal Facility opened its doors to the more than 30,000 people expected to use the structure on a daily basis.
TranSystems was the architect- and engineer-of-record for the project that improves connectivity between O’Hare, the rental car operations and the transit line. The centralized location houses ten rental companies with transport to O’Hare terminals. Once the people mover is complete in 2019, it will reduce traffic congestion in the passenger terminal area and streamline airport functions. Free shuttle buses will operate all day, seven days a week while the people mover train is being finished. Arriving passengers can board the buses from the lower level baggage claim at each terminal.
By eliminating trips from rental car vans and expanding the people mover, it is predicted that vehicle traffic around the terminals will decrease by approximately 1.3 million vehicles a year.
This project showcases the wide range of services and capabilities TranSystems offers clients and how our knowledge across transportation modes helps us make informed, integrated design decisions to create safe and efficient facilities for our client.
TranSystems has a powerful presence in the consolidated rental car, intermodal transportation center, and airport parking structure market, being one of the top three designers of these facilities in the country.
The Chicago Department of Aviation is hosting a grand opening celebration Wednesday, Nov. 7th. Construction of the nine-story $782 million facility, one of the largest capital improvements at O’Hare, began in May 2015.
