NYC High Bridge Historic Rehabilitation

New York City Parks & Rec Department, New York

The landmarked High Bridge was originally built between 1839-1848 to carry the first water main into New York from the Croton Aqueduct. The bridge, 1100 ft long by 23 ft wide, is composed of 10 original stone masonry arches and a three hinged steel arch,  and connects Manhattan to the Bronx.  This project is structurally rehabilitating the bridge to carry pedestrians and to enhance it with lighting and  rest areas. The bridge will also become a “linear library,” with signage describing its history and stations for viewing the extant water main.
