West Broadway Historic Rehabilitation

The 318 ft-long West Broadway Bridge, a vital crossing of the Passaic River at Paterson, NJ, is a three-span, concrete-steel reinforced arch structure. The 1897 bridge it is among the longest, as well as the earliest, of the Melan Arch designs, detailed with brownstone masonry spandrel walls and pier cutwaters. TranSystems performed the bridge scoping and determined that the structure could be rehabilitated while preserving its historic features through meticulous repointing and replication of vintage details.  The project involved the strengthening of the arch spans, which allowed for the removal of weight restrictions.
