Dan Ryan Rapid Transit Reconstruction

Chicago Transit Authority

Project Summary

TranSystems was the Designer of Record (DoR) and provided construction support for 8.1 miles of ballast track section and the ADA improvements to 63rd Station as part of the Dan Ryan Red Line Renewal. Constructed nearly 50 years ago in a highway median, it had outlived its design life and required a complete overall to restore to useful serviceability. The design work was accomplished in an accelerated nine month schedule and coordinated with another consulting team in charge of the overall project coordination, and design of the elevated section and remaining station renewals. With the tight construction schedule, it was necessary to work closely as a team and with the CM staff to ensure timely responses. To maintain the construction schedule, TranSystems provided onsite construction support, provided at the request of the CTA, allowing for immediate design decisions in the field on drainage issues encountered due to buried obstructions. Key design challenges included the need to maintain existing stations and preserving the integrity of signals, communication and traction power system cables, ducts and related components. The final outcome provides faster, smoother and more accessible railroad service to over 250,000 travelers per day.
