Michigan City Rail Reroute Study

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District

Project Summary

TranSystems completed a study of potential reroutes of the joint Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District and the SouthShore Freight line, which is currently operated "on street" through much of Michigan City. The line was originally constructed as an electric intercity railroad using street trackage to traverse crowded urban areas. Over time the railroad was relocated around other cities.  Michigan City is the final segment and a significant barrier to the higher capacity and lower travel times needed to attract further ridership. The reroute study included conceptual plans, profiles, typical sections, order of magnitude cost estimate, simulation run timing, and visualization imagery for public meetings.

Project Highlights
