San Jose Consolidated Rental Car Facility

San Jose Airport

Project Summary

As part of a design-build team, TranSystems provided a wide range of design and planning services for the vehicular processing for this consolidated rental car facility at San Jose International Airport. TranSystems duties included facility programming, site investigation including geotechnical and utility investigation, demand analysis, development and analyses of concept alternatives, preliminary and final design, and construction administration/inspection services. This type of facility corresponds to a growing trend in the United States to increase operational efficiencies and enhance the customer experience in the rental car industry. This complex and challenging project will significantly improve the level of customer service for patrons through development of a creative design on a complex and geometrically constrained site. The facility, constructed in a high seismic zone, is comprised of two distinct portions: the 6-level concrete parking facility and the adjacent three-level vehicular processing area. Both structures are constructed using a mix of precast and conventionally reinforced concrete. The parking facility covers an irregularly shaped 19-acre parcel. Ground level public parking areas serves the facility which features 3000 spaces for rental vehicles. The parking garage area includes a 26,000 sq. ft. Customer Service area featuring 57 counter spaces for the rental car carriers. The attached processing facility is comprised a staggered three-level structure that allows access from the parking building. The processing wing includes 63 fuel stalls, 12 vehicular wash stations, and nine service bays for vehicular repairs and maintenance. Each processing level is secured and traffic is controlled through the use of guard booths and control arms at strategic locations.
