Circle Interchange Improvements

Illinois DOT

Project Summary

The Circle Interchange functions as the hub of the Chicago expressway system and was built in the late 1950s and early 1960s, making it outdated. The Illinois Department of Transportation selected the TranSystems and AECOM team to improve the mobility, operations, safety, and facility condition of this heavily constrained and congested urban interchange. The team developed a solution acceptable to the stakeholders as it only required 0.1 acres of permanent land acquisition – the goal was to reduce displacements and relocation of local residents and businesses. The project is in Phase II and is scheduled to be complete in 2018.

Project Highlights

  • Outdated interchange needed improved mobility, operations, safety and facility condition
  • Only required 0.1 acres of permanent land acquisition to avoid displacements
  • Phase II: roadway and interstate plan preparation, possible reconstruction
