I-80/94 at I-294 Interchanges and Widening

Illinois DOT

Project Summary

The design for this interchange was an elegant solution for minimizing impacts on its site in a forest preserve. Two three-level flyover bridges contributed to the small footprint and an enlarged loop ramp was provided in a quadrant that had no impacts. Overall, the design covered widening and reconstruction of 8 miles of Interstate 80/94 to provide four lanes in each direction, associated arterial roadway improvements, a total of three interchange reconfigurations, and new collector/distributor roads. The project won the ACEC - IL Special Achievement Award for Studies and Research and IDOT's Exceptional Service Award for Phase I Urban Projects.

Project Highlights

  • Design innovations minimized environmental impacts, eliminated the need for two existing pump stations, and avoided the need and cost of a fourth-level flyover
