Kenneth Burns Memorial Bridge Replacement

Project Summary

The Kenneth Burns Memorial Bridge is a 900-ft historic open spandrel concrete arch structure that connects the City of Worcester and the Town of Shrewsbury. When TranSystems’ bridge inspection showed it to be in critical condition, MassDOT asked us to investigate repair alternatives. Ultimately, replacement was deemed necessary but stakeholders wanted to preserve the gateway feel of the bridge. TranSystems’ scope of services included the generation and comparison of several bridge type alternatives, traffic engineering, preliminary design of the selected bridge type, and public outreach. As part of TranSystems design services for the replacement, 3-D visualization was critical in identifying the preferred alternative and garnering public support for the replacement concept.
