Lindbergh Viaduct Historical Rehabilitation

Pennsylvania DOT - District 5, Allentown, Pennsylvania

Lindbergh Viaduct, built in 1927, is composed of thirteen, open spandrel arch spans, bending on a horizontal curve and supported by tangent arch ribs and variable-width piers. PennDOT’s goal was to preserve the viaduct.  TranSystems performed an in-depth inspection and structural analysis and rating using STAAD III for the finite element computer program.  Through interagency consultation, it was determined that the main spans could be rehabilitated in accordance with The Secretary of the Interior’s Standards.  Deteriorated material was replaced with sound material to duplicate the original architectonic detailing.
