Maryland Avenue over I-17 Pedestrian Bridge

City of Phoenix, AZ

Project Summary

TranSystems was the prime consultant for the design of the Maryland Avenue over I-17 two-span steel-tube-truss bicycle and pedestrian bridge. Contract plans and construction services were also provided for the project. Design of the 250-ft-long, 12-ft-10-in.-wide structure was driven by an artist's concept for truss shape; the complication of a misplaced pier was turned into an aesthetic advantage by "bending" the bridge at the center. Curved, cantilevered oval ramps of structural steel on steel columns transition to concrete ramps on grade, meeting ADA requirements while minimizing right-of-way.
