Coal Importing Facility

Dominion Terminal Associates

Project Summary

This design/build project expanded the coal pier, crane rails and conveyor systems for Dominion's coal importing facility on the east bank of the James River. The facility consists of coal materials-handling equipment and systems for railcar off-loading wharf and has an annual throughput capacity of 22 million tons. After a functional analysis of different operating scenarios, TranSystems designed a 1,200-foot-long pier, conveyors, coal hoppers, dredging and new crane rails, and provision for three mobile cranes, with capacity to export coal and accommodate a variety of ships, the largest being 180,000 DWT colliers.
