SIT Yards and Switching Yards

Storage-in-transit (SIT) facilities and switching yards offer an opportunity for the rail industry and its users to better serve their customers. Adding these onsite SIT spots reduces rail congestion and improves rail efficiencies and customer delivery times. TranSystems’ knowledgeable staff provides diverse services to meet the needs of each entity and their interrelated system.

As the Class I railroad interchange and SIT yard congestion has increased, the price to store cars at those SIT yards has continued to increase. As a means for addressing these changing costs and enabling clients to improve rail service to their customers, we provide engineering design and construction management services.

As part of to the design process, our staff utilizes a rail network modeling tool called TranSystems Transportation Modeling Studio (TMS) to build models that represent the rail traffic flow considering the manufacturing schedule for unique projects; site specific SIT yard configuration; and facility procedures for receiving, storing, and blocking rail cars for outbound shipment. The models are then used to explore alternative designs and operating strategies for the most effective use of the facility, tracks, and crews.

Our staff works closely with plant and railroad personnel to ensure disruptions to existing operations are minimized and the resulting project meets, and even exceeds, the client’s goals and expectations.
