Project Summary

For each of the company’s plastic resin plants, TranSystems developed simulation models to represent the rail traffic flow linking production, plant yards, Storage In Transit (SIT) Yards, and arriving / departing trains. Each model incorporated the production schedule for several hundred products, specific SIT yard configuration, and procedures for receiving, storing, and blocking rail cars for outbound shipment. The models were used to explore ways of assigning rail cars to SIT tracks and retrieving cars for shipment that most effectively use the yard tracks and crews.
