CSX 59th Street Intermodal Yard

Milord Company for CSX, Chicago, Illinois

TranSystems provided design engineering for a new 132-acre intermodal rail terminal on an abandoned yard. The terminal, used to transfer truck trailers/containers between CSXI trains and trucking operators, was carefully blended into its multi-use surroundings. The facility provides six, 4,500-foot loading/unloading tracks utilizing three gantry cranes, five storage tracks, two receiving/departure tracks, and 1,500 trailer storage spaces. Eight new railroad/craneway viaducts and two retaining walls were designed for the elevated site, with very tight clearances above and below the bridges.
