Olathe BNSF West Track Quiet Zone

Project Summary

City of Olathe, Kansas

The 120,000 residents of Olathe, KS had to deal with traffic delays and train whistles at 11 at-grade rail crossings in its busy downtown. The City planned to establish a Quiet Zone to eliminate the noise pollution.  A preliminary plan involved safety measures such as installation of raised medians and four quad-gate systems. However, TranSystems rail engineers suggested an alternative: elevating the tracks for 1.4 miles. A ceremonial last whistle was blown during the project dedication as the first train passed over the new rail bridges.
