Restoration and adaptive use projects demand a somewhat different approach and set of skills than new design projects. Restoration design must respond to the existing character, condition and context of the historic building or site. Successful restoration and reuse projects find creative solutions to inherent and posed problems presented by the constraints of existing fabric, form, and concept.
TranSystems restoration design is based on a thorough comprehension of a building’s history, design and construction, gained through archival research and on-site survey. As part of our process we work with clients to identify, qualify, and quantify the programmatic goals and space requirements of those who will use the building when its restoration is complete. A well-restored building is a well-functioning building.
A significant percentage of restoration design work is designed for repair. Our staff works to develop a comprehensive understanding of the existing physical conditions at the site, developed through thoughtful analysis of the exterior envelope, interior spaces, underlying structure and all building systems. When new design elements are required within the historic context our staff takes great care to complement, but not mimic, the past. These elements should possess their own identity and engage in dialogue with the existing fabric.
With a full spectrum of disciplines, industry focus, and geographic reach, we take our client’s vision from the conceptual environment to the built environment. Our experience crosses the entire spectrum of transportation-related systems so we can tailor our approach to your individual project.
