NOAA Laboratory Consolidation Project

National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration

Project Summary

AIA San Diego granted one of only four 2008 design Honor Awards to the not-yet-completed  "laboratory for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration next to Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla."  The jury felt the project design deserved the rare honor due to its great "promise for advancing sustainability."  TranSystems designed the 124,000 SF facility with another 90,000 SF of underground parking. Challenges included the extreme grades on the site; compliance with guidelines and master plans of UCSD, the site owner; meeting code seismic requirements; and, for security, making the structure resistant to progressive collapse.  The facility will accommodate up to 300 personnel and contain lab spaces, offices, storage, group gathering areas and delivery/staging areas.
